With all the spring rain and continued damp conditions into summer, the crops
are slow to grow. I had hoped to start the delivery this week, but the
variety is just not out there to make the boxes interesting. Good news is
that the fava beans are plumping up, radicchio is heading up nicely and
summer squash and zukes are just around the corner. I look forward to

veggies are out of sight this week. the fields are missing tomatoes this season, we just tilled them under and planted buckwheat. yep, we got the virus that has been floating around the northeast, and if you are into tomatoes be prepared to pay a premium this season, many farms knocked pretty hard by this virus. we all know what the only real cash crop is ..., but tomatoes on small organic farms is another, so i heard that a few organic farms opted to spray and save the tomatoes and risk losing organic certification.

ahhhhh, finally rain came through and the plants are really taking off. Cauliflower, broccoli, tomatoes, melons, cabbage, fennel were really thirsty. More Lettuce is just around the corner, so until then enjoy radicchio and frisee salads. we especially like the radicchio salad (keeping the leaves whole) with big chunks of garlic, olive oil and apple cider vinegar, oh and a teeny splash of soy sauce:)

short on rain, the plants are taking their time. boxes sometimes include samples, for example this week look for 1 or 2 hot peppers, 1 or 2 miniature eggplant, 4 pieces of kale, tiny celery (i bet tons of flavor though, try a cold soup). we pick samples by picking fruit early to stimulate plant growth and the other is by thinning, which creates more space for neighboring plants to grow.
